Today was supposed to be productive—a day where I finally crossed off several important business tasks that have been waiting on my to-do list. The week had already been a whirlwind. Between caring for sick kids, enjoying the oddly beautiful and chilly weather, and pouring my energy into being a teacher, I hadn’t accomplished as much as I’d hoped.
But today was the day. I had a plan.
That is, until life had its own plans.
The Incident
As I was cooking breakfast—well, more like brunch—one of my kids managed to drop my phone straight into the sink water. At first, there was just silence. Then I heard a voice say, “Oops…”
“Oops? Oops, what?” I asked.
“Mom, I dropped your phone in the water.”
I stared at her, stunned. My first reaction was an almost cinematic, slow-motion “NOOOOO!” because let’s be real—nobody has time or extra funds to spend on replacing a phone. Especially not these days, when phones are practically investments!
I scrambled to grab the phone, dried it off, and dunked it in a bowl of rice. All I could think was, There goes my day. My phone was my lifeline—a tool I rely on to juggle being a mom, with many hats. I didn’t want to spend the day on the computer when my phone is usually my go-to for getting tasks done on the fly.
I was upset, and I let it show. I fussed. I huffed. I sighed loudly. But then, something happened.
The Apology
My daughter ran off upset that I was upset, but a little while later, she came back and gave me the biggest hug. “I’m sorry for dropping your phone, Mommie,” she said softly.
My heart melted right then and there.
I hugged her back and apologized too. I explained why I was so frustrated and why paying attention to what we’re doing is so important. But I also reassured her that accidents happen, and it was okay. In that moment, I realized the interruption wasn’t just an inconvenience—it was an opportunity.
The Shift in Perspective
Instead of spending the day focusing on what I couldn’t do without my phone, I shifted my focus to what I could do. It became a family day—a day to connect, laugh, and be present. I managed to tackle a few tasks earlier in the day before the phone incident, and the rest? It could wait.
As I reflected on the situation, I felt God whisper, Do you trust Me without that phone? It was a humbling reminder that, as much as we depend on our phones, our ultimate dependence should be on Him.
The Takeaway
Life as a wife, mom, means wearing many hats and juggling countless responsibilities. But it also means learning to adapt when things don’t go as planned. It’s about grace—for ourselves, for our kids, and for those unexpected moments that disrupt our day.
If you’ve ever had a day where things didn’t go as planned, remember this: God is in control. Sometimes, those interruptions are His way of saying, “Pause. Trust Me. I’ve got you.”
And honestly, today turned out to be a blessing in disguise. My phone may still be sitting in a bowl of rice, but I gained precious moments with my family and a renewed focus on what truly matters.
So, to all the multitasking moms out there: Take a deep breath. It’s okay if things don’t go perfectly. Life happens, and God’s got us covered.
A day in the life of a mom—and a reminder to keep trusting Him.
